Brussels, Belgium EBM (Electronic Body Movement) Coldwave duo Ultra Sunn—Sam Huge, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist; Gaelle Souflet, keyboardist and producer—will bring their high-energy, hypnotic, electronic, 80s-90s influenced, modern synth mix to Columbus, Ohio tonight at Ace Of Cups as part of their The Beast In You Tour, in support of their new sophomore album.
While traveling near the West Coast for tour stops, Ultra Sunn took time out for this OOTB Interview to discuss their live show experience, touring in different regions, collaborations, new album, next plans and more.
The live video for “Keep Your Eyes Peeled” really expresses the energy at your shows. After a fan goes to a live performance, what do you hope they take away from the show as a memory, years later?
We do everything we can to communicate an intense and positive energy. We just want to share something powerful and luminous. I can’t help but smile a lot during our shows, and I can see the audience sharing that feeling with us.
I think the best memory a fan can keep is: “We were together, and we shared everything.”
How do crowds compare between Europe and the States?
It’s difficult to compare, because in Europe there are so many different cultures and identities. A Spanish audience doesn’t express itself the same way as a Finnish one. In the U.S., people react differently too. Southern California is not the same as Nashville or New York.
What we really love is that diversity and how, very quickly, all those differences fade away, and what remains is the night, the music, and that shared energy.
In the U.S., we’re lucky to have audiences that always make us feel at home. It’s a real joy for us to tour here so often.
You’ve collaborated with so many greats! Which collaboration stands out to you the most and how so?
We especially love collaborations that feel like true feats rather than remixes. Our track with Front Line Assembly stands out, along with the very cool video they created. Bill has so much class. He’s one of those pioneers who genuinely cares about and supports the new generation, which is inspiring.
We also loved working with Twin Tribes. They have the perfect attitude, and I think we’ve already said in interviews how much we admire each other’s music.
Are there any artists you’d like to collaborate with outside your genre—someone fans might not expect—and why?
So many! We listen to all kinds of music without limiting ourselves. We’re still big fans of Lana Del Rey, and we think it could be a perfect match. Something dramatic and possessed. And doing something with Iggy Pop would be incredible too.
What’s your favorite song on your latest album The Beast In You and why?
Of course, we want to say “The Beast In You.” It resonates deeply with us; it’s healing, it’s powerful, and the way it connects with people is very intense. The sound really carries us.
We also love “You Came With a Blade.” It’s a track we absolutely love playing live. The whole room transforms and you can feel this wild energy circulating. It’s electrifying.
For us, it’s a real victory to take feelings like betrayal and violence and turn them into something so explosive.
What are your plans following this tour?
Touring again!
We have quite a few shows coming up in Europe, then Mexico and Canada, before returning to the U.S. in October for another long tour.
And after that… touring again. There are still countries where fans have been waiting for us for a long time.
After all that, we’ll take some time to write and compose, we really want to take our time before making a third album.
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
I answered these questions in a van, on the road between Las Vegas and Los Angeles. The landscape here is dreamy and constantly changing. I’ll never get tired of the desert’s endless poetry. There’s something almost divine and mystical about it. This experience fills me with light and love.
Thanks so much again for all your time!
Thank you! Take care.
