Album Review: Bright Eyes, Five Dice, All Threes, out now

Written By Christian Cole, OOTB Publications   The last few years have been nothing short of exciting for fans of Bright Eyes and frontman Conor Oberst.  Seeing the band’s return to form in 2020 with Down In The Weeds, Where The World Once Was was a stunning and triumphant comeback with a backing band that featured the likes of Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers) and Jon Theodore (the Mars Volta, QOTSA). There was also a string of EPs that had re-imagined versions of some of Bright Eyes’ favorite tracks from throughout their career. Needless to say, fans have been more than satisfied in recent years.  Now, Bright Eyes is releasing the first album of originals since 2020’s Down In The Weeds… and fans should be absolutely ecstatic.  With Five Dice, All Threes (Dead Oceans) we get a band that’s been sharpened to the perfect point. Oberst’s songwriting capability is in full form on this record, leading us through a 13-song cinematic and explorative experience—through a whirlwind of twanging

Interview: Ex-Sleep Signals' project Eyes Like Midnight release new singles, videos, full album planned

Written By Neil Shumate, OOTB Publications   Redmond, Oregon’s Eyes Like Midnight emerged after vocalist Robert Cosgrove’s band of ten years, Sleep Signals, disbanded in 2023.  Since forming and solidifying, the trio has released three major singles this year: “ Digital Deity ,” “ Bad Love ,” and most recently, “ Quicksand .” The band’s Devourer EP is out digitally in November. New single “A Coffin Song” will release next Tuesday, Sept. 24 and has been previewed with a short film: Part I The Plan and Part II The Heist . In this extensive OOTB interview with Cosgrove, he discusses the project’s genre diversity, his wide range of influences, new freedoms with the writing process, past setbacks, future plans and more. Why did you decide to release “Quicksand” as the next single? We decided to release "Quicksand" as our third single because we wanted some contrast with the previous single, "Bad Love." This project has allowed us to get really creative with our music

Top 5 Feature: Mike's Wilson

Mike’s Wilson is a songwriter collective from Columbus, Ohio. The project began way back in 2016 as a makeshift, impromptu collaboration of members of The Bloody Irish Boys and Little Orphan Anarchy.  After a long hiatus, Mike has resurfaced with a new crop of tunes documenting growing up and out of scene life, excess, and toxic culture.  Upcoming album PartyTown is currently being released with one single at a time, which began with “You,” available on streaming platforms now. “You” is an indie ballad about developing and maintaining healthy boundaries with toxic people. A new single, “The March,” will release Thursday, Sept. 19 on streaming services. Following “The March,” another single, “Burn Baby Burn,” will release Thursday, Oct. 3. Mike is taking the show on the road, playing mostly solo, but often with a changing cast of characters supporting him. Upcoming Shows September 18  PBR Bar - Louisville, Ky September 20  Logan Live at the Coalfield Jamboree - Logan, WV September 21

Album Review: Seether, The Surface Seems So Far, out Sept. 20

Written By Christian Cole, OOTB Publications   Whether you like them or not, it is nearly impossible to discuss post-grunge music without at LEAST citing Seether. Formed in South Africa in 1999 and finding fame soon after in 2002 with the chart topping single “ Fine Again ,” the band is no stranger to success.  Now they’re preparing for the release of their ninth full-length studio album The Surface Seems So Far (Fantasy Records), an eleven-track LP produced by frontman Shaun Morgan himself and mixed and engineered by Matt Hyde.  This album is a great showcase of a very popular band that’s still doing things right, a quarter of a century in. Sure, there are incredibly minuscule moments that feel overproduced, but it’s greatly overshadowed by the fact that these guys REALLY still feel what they do.  The album is jam packed full of emotion and hits so much harder than I’d expect. As someone who stepped away from this specific sound after graduating high school, I found myself quite sh
