Album Review: Crobot, Obsidian, out now

Written By Christian Cole, OOTB Publications

Pottsville, Pennsylvania based hard rock band Crobot has just released their latest full length effort Obsidian, marking their fifth LP since 2014.

Fusing the grandiose and large sound of 80’s metal, the haunting howl of 90’s grunge and the slow drudge of stoner metal, fans are in for a fairly immersive experience.

Loaded track by track with muddy riffs and a smokey ambience, the mix and fusion of different styles of metal works well on these guys. It keeps it from ever sounding too dated, or uninspired.

There were moments I found myself reminded of Chris Cornell, while never possible to replicate, it’s hard not to hear the influence in the occasional wail laid on top of a smoking hot riff. It’s in the delivery.

All in all, it feels like good stoner metal, amped up a little bit and tinged with the same energy of 80’s metal classics but with a much more 1990’s delivery.

So, pop in a headphone, take your preferred toke (or don’t), and melt into the riffs.
