Interview: Jason Charles Miller on new album, new single, Godhead, southern music, next plans

Written By Neil Shumate, OOTB Publications

Aside from Jason Charles Miller having a resume which includes more than one hundred video games and animated productions as a voice actor (including: Final Fantasy XIV, Halo Infinite, World Of Warcraft, Star Craft 2, Diablo III, Guild Wars 2, Street Fighter, Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Wonder Woman, Battle Planet, Day Of The Dead 2008 remake, Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles), host of Geek & Sundry’s “Starter Kit,” and a featured guest of Dungeons & Dragons, Nerdist, Renegade Games and Codename Entertainment, Miller is also a southern rock, country, blues singer and songwriter who previously led rock industrial group Godhead.

Mid-August, Miller released his fifth solo album Knives In The Dark (One Opportunity Records) and recently released the album’s lead single “Digging In The Dust,” which features an intriguing sci-fi music video.

Fresh off tour supporting Steel Panther and before performing at a Final Fantasy Fan Fest event this weekend at Yokohama Arena in Yokohama-shi, Japan, Miller discussed his ties to southern music, Godhead, the new solo record and single, and more in this interview with OOTB.

Watch Video For “Digging In The Dust”

What’s the main thing you hope listeners will take away from Knives In The Dark?

A great listening experience, and inspiration to listen again.

“Digging In The Dust” is kind, of sci-fi, Dune/spice, planet Mars-like and it turns pretty personal at the end with a reunion. What was the inspiration and influences behind the video? And is the song just as personal as the video?

Well, the idea behind the video is to show the power of love. The idea behind the song is about a relationship that's already over, but the people don't realize it yet.  In a weird way, the video is also about that, just portrayed in a different way. Long ago, I was in a relationship that was long dead, but neither of us wanted to admit it.

Godhead was kind of a goth industrial band—from image to sound—with a killer cover of “Eleanor Rigby.” What pulled you away from that style and more into southern rock, blues and country?

I grew up in rural Virginia. Southern music was always in my blood. When Godhead started to slow down, I really wanted to explore other musical directions that really inspired me.

What’s the current status of Godhead?

We're on hiatus, but you never know what the future could bring.

How do you deal with video game reviews and reactions from games you’ve worked on?

I'm usually pretty good with dealing with them. I know my performance doesn't reflect whether a game is successful or not. There are so many factors that go into a review of a game.

Thinking back through your career and all the realms you’ve been part of, what’s been your biggest highlight?

Singing at the Tokyo Dome this past January! That was so surreal. It was for a Final Fantasy 14 concert and all 30,000 fans knew every word to every song.

What is one thing you’d still like to do or a goal you’ve had in mind that hasn’t happened yet?

To perform at the Grand Ol Opry, and on a late night television show.

What’s next or lined up for you as far as any future voice projects, film or as a touring musician after the Steel Panther dates?

Yes, as soon as the Steel Panther tour is over I head to Japan for two concerts at the Yokohama Arena with The Primals for FF14, and then our record release party for the new album is Oct. 4 in Los Angeles. Then, I head to S. Korea for four concerts and I plan on touring a lot in 2025 to support the album.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

687+254=941! Keep on the lookout for lots of new music and various adventures in entertainment from me in the very near future! Lots of projects I'm not even allowed to talk about are coming out every few months.
