Oversea’s genre-blending doom and death metal band Kaunis Kuolematon have just released their new nine-song LP Kun Valo Minussa Kuoli (Nobel Demon), album title meaning: When The Light In Me Died.
This, marking the Hamina, Finland band’s fifth release since forming in 2012, includes lead singles "Merta,” (Sea), Maailman Ainut Ihminen,” (The Only Person In The World), “Rauniot” (Ruins).
In this OOTB Interview, Finnish clean vocalist and guitarist Mikko Heikkilä took time to discuss the new record, songwriting, longevity and more.
With the band’s new album Kun Valo Minussa Kuoli now released, what feedback and reception have you received?
Hi. Yes, our latest album is out now.
The feedback has been very positive and it seems that our album has been a success overall.
The album has been described as heavy and very sad, but in a positive way.
The album is said to be easy to take in. Very emotional.
What is your personal favorite track on the new album and why that particular song?
From the beginning, I still stick to the same. That song is called “Merta.”
This song contains all the pieces that our band is based on. It moves from one end to the other on an emotional level.
In all its diversity, it contains everything essential, despite its colorfulness. Even though the song contains many different parts, it is still a unified whole.
Since the first album in 2014 (Kylmä kaunis maailma/Cold Beautiful World) what approaches have you maintained when recording and writing and what, if anything, have you changed?
The process of making the album has remained almost unchanged, compared to the past.
We have three songwriters in the band and the songs that end up on the album are formed according to how each one of them happened to compose them.
We don't make a specific plan, we just proceed as it feels right.
But what has changed? Trust. Trust into our own way to work during the process.
I think these years that we have been working together has affected a lot how we proceed.
Having the same lineup since forming in 2012, what does it take to maintain such solidarity and longevity?
The reason we've stayed together for so long is because the core of what we do is based on friendship.
It would probably be different if we thought more about what kind of musician each of us is and thought about things from a different perspective. This is good for us and those years tell the positive outcome.
I've known a couple of these guys since childhood, so it's nice to look back on this journey and think about what we've achieved as friends. That's great and much more than just that.
Do you have any plans to tour the U.S. in the future?
Not at the moment, at least. If things were simpler and more dependent on us, we would be happy to come. So it's not that we wouldn't want to.
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
We have a long history and this latest album is our fifth studio album. Get to know our band and give it a chance.
Our music is very rich, emotional; there is definitely something for everyone.
Take care of yourself and your loved ones.
