I recently had the chance to ask rising country artist Theo Lawrence a few questions. As a singer-songwriter of ten years hailing from Bordeaux, France, now based in Austin, Lawrence has a unique old-school americana sound with twang and rockabilly swagger. His latest Warner Records’ singles, duets with Melissa Carper—“The Way I Remember You” and “All Fifty States”—are out now.
You have a throwback country sound. Tell me how a a man of your background fell in love with this kind of music.
I discovered country music through rock & roll bands, soul singers and pop performers from the ‘50s and ‘60s. I didn’t grow up around country music, so that was my gateway.
All these artists that inspire me used to cover songs of their era, and a lot of the strongest songs in my opinions are country at the core.
Who would you cite as your biggest influences?
Lee Hazlewood, The Everly Brothers, Elvis, Dusty Springfield, Charlie Rich
If you could play a show with any three artists, living or dead, who would it be?
Elvis, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin
Who are you currently listening to?
The Bobby Fuller Four, The Shirelles and the Shangi-Las
How are you finding life on the road?
My favorite thing about it is I get to discover new places and go to towns I’ve never been before with my friends. We listen to music in the van, and I think we know how to have fun, even in simple and unassuming moments.
I wouldn’t want to do it all the time, but I like the balance between writing music at home, and then hitting the road to show the world what you’ve been working on.
Hypothetically, you just played a phenomenal show in a sold-out venue. Where are we stopping for food and what are you ordering?
We are going to get Pesto Pasta and Red Wine at an Italian Restaurant
Thank you, sir, for taking time to answer my questions and giving our readers an insight into your life and method to your madness.
