Concert Review: Yung Gravy in Columbus, Ohio

By James Magill, OOTB Publications

The former church, now The Bluestone, was packed and the music was loud and thumping on Thursday, Nov. 20 in Columbus, Ohio.

DJ Tiiiiiiiiiip was spinning an eclectic set when I finally got inside (I couldn’t find my wallet or ID); he switched effortlessly between current hits and classics and the audience danced and sang.

It was an at capacity crowd, loud and rambunctious.

The DJ introduced Yung Gravy and the two immediately started into his set.

Yung Gravy’s lackadaisical style and smooth voice didn’t translate well into live performance. The sound mix was a little heavy in bass and the vocals were drowned out, but the crowd was into it and sang every word.

It was a house party atmosphere and it worked well, but it just wasn’t a great musical performance.

Energy was high and I left feeling more like I had just been out on the town, rather than seeing a show.

Yung Gravy played towards his strengths and it worked with the crowd he had—he played his hits, worked the crowd and did everything you would expect.

Yung Gravy’s Voluptuous Voyage Tour ends early next month.
