Milwaukee, Wisconsin based melodic metal band Vacant Voice released their latest single “Code Red” (LCY Media) today, accompanied by a music video, and the track is laced with political statements about the state of the world that surrounds us.
“Code Red” manages to address the cyclical nature of the worst parts of history without coming off as preachy.
Its honest and brutal lyricism is stacked against murderous riffs that slow down into a spacious break before punching back up yet again.
“Wake up in a sweat still glued to the bed/so sick of this fucking dread/Face down feel the weight of the world in my chest/and everything that we must protect” boasts frontman Brad Taylor, as he delivers us a feeling we all have felt at one time or another: A hopelessness for the world around us, stuck watching the divide, the slow collapse.
As the track ends, we are hit with the words “it’s so fucking unbearable the things we let contrive/live your life as a parable or live in 1945,” furthering the feel of desperation, and calling for swift change before we find ourselves back in the worst of weather.
In whole, “Code Red” is an incredibly valid track, something that I feel almost everybody can find relation to in 2025, and it carries a message that should be shaking us all to our core.
Change is needed on all fronts, and it’s nice to hear the music scene standing for it with class, poise, and filthy riffs.
Vocalist Brad Wilson on the song:
"”Code Red” is about the connection between violent and oppressive cycles perpetuated in one's own life, and how that has a ripple effect on society; which has been playing out in our current presidential administration. History has been repeating itself in front of our eyes, and the weight of that has been suffocating for many, including us."
