Review & Photos: Purity Ring, yuniVERSE in Columbus, Ohio

Indie electronic pop duo Purity Ring—who released their fourth studio album Purity Ring last month—brought a visually stunning performance to Columbus, Ohio at Newport Music Hall on the evening of Saturday, Oct. 25.

The music: an electro blend of upbeat hype and lowkey chill; a bit of Pop, Indie, Trance—sometimes mirroring the likes of Lorde and Billie Eilish with subtle reflections of Bjork. Other times, similar textures to BT and Underworld.

The imagery: an immersive magical spectacle of explosive broken lights cast on fast moving layered propellers (like large factory fans), causing firework-like bursts, all along with a backing screen displaying geographic and spacey visuals.

The music was synched with the lights and visuals, never missing a step—kind of like a light show with thousands of drones in the sky, but on land.

Instrumentalist Corin Roddick was at the center of the stage with his electronic equipment that folded down to create and resemble interactive colorful button pushes in the front, like a game of Simon Says.

Vocalist Megan James stood behind Roddick on a high platform in front of the screen; often moving, dancing and kneeling with a dim lit microphone that occasionally cast light on her face.

At the request of the artist, fans wore N95 or KN95 masks, which were provided upon entrance to the venue.

A statement read: “We want our shows to be a place where we take care of each other. Wearing a high-filtration mask is an act of material care and a show of solidarity with disabled and immunocompromised people. It's a small thing we can do to keep each other safe.”

The duo, which formed in 2010, also partnered with PLUS1 so that $1 per ticket went to support The Black Trans Prayer Book, and their work to celebrate and uplift Black Trans and Non-Binary people.

Around 2017, the Alberta, Canada pair worked with Katy Perry on three songs for her album Witness, during which they also opened some dates for Perry’s Witness: The Tour.

Solo modern dance pop vocalist and producer yuniVERSE opened the show… and whenever her bass beats hit, the place was moving.

The Indonesian-Australian artist was surrounded by large Hawaiian or Japanese-like flowers as she operated completely solo; dancing and singing with backing tracks via her laptop.

The tour concludes mid-November.
