I was giddy all week for this—listening to AFI songs I hadn’t heard in forever, jonesing for a proper punk rock show. Sadly, that’s not what I was given.
The Bluestone in Columbus, Ohio was packed deep on Saturday, Oct. 4, and I was so excited to see AFI in this intimate venue. As I took my place on the floor in clear view of the stage, I was eager to check out the opening act. I had never heard of TR/ST before.
I knew pretty quickly that this band wasn’t for me. Synth-laden music with a pretty kickass drum beat—it’s just not my style. I won’t say I was bored, but it’s rare for me to see a band and not want to check out at least something I heard again. I didn’t have that here. Luckily, they plowed through their set, and it was finally time for AFI.
With the crowd chanting, “Through our bleeding, we are one!” the band took the stage, launching into “Strength Through Wounding” and tearing through it before moving into “Girl’s Not Grey,” which got the place the loudest it was all night.
Frontman Davey Havoc is just that—a sensational frontman who gave his all in his performance and sounded great. The band played phenomenally as well.
I was glad to hear a good mix of their older and newer music. A band that’s had so many different sounds and eras can sometimes struggle to put together a solid setlist.
I absolutely loved hearing “God Called In Sick Today,” but the lack of “Miss Murder” was criminal—especially knowing they played it two nights later in New York.
The show ended a little before 10:30 p.m. and I couldn’t help but feel a bit disappointed as I walked toward my car. Not because it was a bad show, but because it left me wanting a little something more. Some mayhem. A wall of death. More punk rock energy.
But, if you get the chance, AFI is an experience I strongly encourage you to check out.
