Album Review: Testament, Para Bellum

By Justin Bauer, OOTB Publications

Pillar of thrash metal, Testament, returns with their fourteenth album: Para Bellum (Nuclear Blast Records).

It’s an assault of fast rhythms, jagged leads, and consistent outright aggression that is a definitive addition to their extensive catalog.

It starts right in your face, and follows through with the kind of dynamic urgency to the craft that feels new while honoring what’s come before.

The guitar work is precise and the tone and distortion is so clear that the sound carries a vintage feel. With modern production techniques, the drums and bass that carry the guitars feel fresh.

Chris Dovas’s drums are so well mixed that his technique shines through in a genre where anything less than perfect gets buried.

The full production is so tightly put together, and the speed of it all is offered up with such clarity that every detail is audible. This allows the mix to breathe in dynamic ways that I don’t hear often in modern metal.

I thoroughly enjoyed the pace and sound of this record, front to back.

The album opens with “For The Love Of Pain,” and it’s an uptempo rampage that sets the tone for what’s to come, as the onslaught of thrash is sure to please fans.

These songs will cause entire mosh pits to shift towards chaos, or just have you flailing about in your room if you're listening by yourself.
