Album Review: Evangelyne, What Am I Without You?

By Christian Cole, OOTB Publications

The small town of Marion, Ohio has proved itself again in recent years that it is loaded to the brim with incredible original talent—from Everything’s Taken to Hospital Brute and everything in between.

Now, we are witnessing a band of youngbucks spearheading the next gen of explosive originality.

That band is Evangelyne, a group of high schoolers experimenting with the next step forward in nü-metal with their very first six track EP What Am I Without You?

Evangelyne consists of Aaron Eaches (guitar and lead vocals), Ethan Baker (drums), Oliver Moore (piano/backing vocals) and Aiden Stallard (bass guitar). Together, the band boasts a sound infusing nü-metal, garage rock and even a tinge of metalcore.

The EP kicks off with “The Man I Knew,” a phone call dialing in the background, slow and ambient guitars quickly leading into power chords and hypnotic vocals laid down by frontman Aaron Eaches.

“The Hills Are Silent,” a track inspired by the video game series Silent Hill, opens up with an ambience comparable to the fog that’s all too familiar to long time fans. Desperate, desolate and aching; the band already moving into new territory two tracks in. The synth rolling in the background adds such an incredible air of emotion, paired perfectly against the drudging and saddened bass line.

The next track, “High On Love,” kicks off with a synth-pad drum intro, at first emanating an indie-pop accentuation, pairing soon with cowbell and an infectious bass line before jumping headfirst into searing power chords. The track rolls its way into some beautiful highs and gut-wrenched growls.

Up next, we get “When The Sun Comes Down,” a song inspired by the awkward moments following the sex scene between Joe and Beck in the popular Netflix series You. A spacial and ambient track, with a sense of dread and discomfort.

Coming in immediately after we get “Pale Letters,” a track inspired by a brutal breakup, and a relationship laced with lies. Easily the prettiest song on the album, it feels intimate and personal. Crossing somewhere between Deftones and the Cure with something incredibly new mixed about, the synth on this track is pushed to the forefront and is a perfect addition to the emotional tension.

With “Rot” coming last, we get hit with an incredible punch-up in energy, Ethan Baker’s pounding drums matching perfectly with the deep and in-your-face growls that are more present than they are on the opening track. Here is where we see the nü-metal energy beginning to grow; the instrumentation absolutely brutal and enticing.

All together, this first EP from the up-and coming young’n’s is truly stellar. From penning lyrics about familial loss (“The Man That I Knew”) all the way to video games and television series (“The Hills Are Silent”/“When the Sun Comes Down”) we get proof that the next era of local music is still being driven by passion and a love for the craft.

What we get with What Am I Without You? is the start of something incredible. A solid showing that the next generation is building blueprints and laying down an incredible foundation for what’s to come next—showing us that the kids aren’t just alright, they’re kicking ass.
