Overkill bassist D.D. Verni is on the cusp of the release of his latest LP Buckle Up (DEKO) alongside his backing group The Cadillac Band, and as odd as it may be to fathom, it’s quite classy.
Buckle Up showcases a side of D.D. that I didn’t know existed; as someone only familiar with his main project Overkill. It’s a big band, malt-shop-esque record full of horns and swing.
To switch from a thrash metal sound into something so poise and so sonically different is impressive enough, but the fact that it’s so well-delivered is an incredible feat as well.
It’s hard for me to knock a record that you can tell is made with love, and this record is certainly made with both love and respect for an era of music that is long gone. D.D. and his band revive a sound frozen in time, and they do so with nothing but class.
If you’re looking for a sound similar to Overkill, you can turn away, but you’d still be depriving yourself of a fun and respectable body of work by a man with a very evident love and respect for music of many genres.
