Progressive hardcore alt quartet Coheed and Cambria brought the rock to a packed outside crowd at Kemba Live! in Columbus, Ohio on Saturday, Aug. 24 along with fellow New York rockers Taking Back Sunday and indie alt-rock band Foxing.
The generally overcast sky, warm temperature and slight breeze made for a comfortable mild summer setting as Foxing heated the crowd up with a fiery set of both angst and dark gentleness with dual vocals between Conor Murphy and guitarist Eric Hudson, along with a range of instrumentation, including a trumpet; overall, a solid sound reminiscent of Cursive or Minus The Bear.
If concert goers were previously unfamiliar with the St. Louis five-piece, they certainly remained in place to watch the whole set and likely became new, lifelong fans.
Following a brief 20-minute set change, Taking Back Sunday led the way with a phenomenal set of emo rock—including a crowd engaging performance of “Liar (It Takes One To Know One),” the riffy 2002 “You’re So Last Summer,” a chorus scream along during “The Photograph Is Proof (I Know You Know)” and the hyped crowd-loving, fast-paced, punk-rock “Cute Without The E (Cut From The Team).”
Energetic lead vocalist Adam Lazzara kept the crowd involved throughout the set, expressing thanks, as he frequently moved from the far back of the stage on a platform riser to the stage’s center middle.
Coheed and Cambria kicked off their set with a part of somber “Yesterday’s Lost” and positive, upbeat “Goodbye, Sunshine” from Vaxus—Act III: The Father Of Make Believe, just released in March.
The ruptive energy of each band member at the forefront on stage—backed by various images on a long background video screen and showered with blankets of light—matched the energy of the dancing and cheering fans in the packed crowd.
The 90-minute or so set featured a well-rounded mix of old and new songs—old from two decades ago albums’ The Second Stage Turbine Blade and In Keeping Secrets Of Silent Earth: 3 and new from 2022’s Vaxus—Act II: A Window Of The Waking Mind alongside the most recent aforementioned record.
Claudio Sanchez’s distinct trademark vocal range, on the verge of Geddy Lee, never faultered and he impressed with his concurrent ability to not only sing with precision, but also nail his guitar shreds; often stepping away from the mic to jam out, before pivoting back to the mic stand.
Overall, a well-aligned solid tour lineup for a perfect night of rock-and-roll of compatible calibers. The current North America tour concludes late September before heading overseas through late October.
