Interview: Levi Foster on debut album, career, unwinding, next plans

By Neil Shumate, OOTB Publications

This Friday, Aug. 29, country artist Levi Foster is releasing his debut full-length album titled We Made Fire (Banner Music, Middleground Music), produced by three-time Grammy-nominated Nashville drummer and producer Ken Coomer (Wilco, Uncle Tupelo, Clockhammer).

From the 10-song album, the Virginia native has released three singles: “She’s In Richmond,” “Emerald Eyes,” “We Made Fire.”

Since moving to Nashville, Foster has released two EPs and many stand-alone singles, he has also opened for: Ashley McBride, Trace Adkins, John Conlee, Lorrie Morgan, Pam Tillis, Vince Gill, The Time Jumpers, and Oliver Anthony.

Foster recently took time for this OOTB Interview to reflect on the album and his career as a musician. He also shares how he unwinds and his next plans.

What was your biggest challenge overall as far as writing or recording We Made Fire and how did you overcome that?

One of the biggest challenges was trusting myself to leave space in the songs.

My instinct is to fill every corner with words or instrumentation, but this record needed room to breathe, so the stories could hit harder.

I overcame that by stepping back, listening as a fan, instead of the writer, and letting the emotion carry more than the arrangement.

Sometimes what you don’t play is just as important as what you do.

What song stands out to you as your favorite on the new record and why that song?

“We Made Fire” is probably my favorite. It feels like the heart of the record. Raw, and deeply human.

It’s loosely based on a real story, and every time I sing it, it takes me back to that wild mix of love, recklessness, and beauty you only get once or twice in your life.

Up to this point, what’s been the biggest highlight of your career and what made that so special to you?

Honestly, making this record has been the biggest highlight, so far.

It’s the first time I’ve felt like the songs, the sound, and the storytelling all lined up exactly how I pictured them in my head. Hearing the mixes back for the first time, knowing we captured something real.

How do you relax and unwind when you experience any stress?

I usually head outside. Whether it’s fishing, hiking, praying, being in nature resets my brain. There’s something about the quiet and the open air that makes problems feel smaller.

What are your future plans following the album’s release and what can fans look forward to?

Right after this album drops, I’m heading back into the studio in late August to start a brand new record.

I’m excited to push myself creatively and explore some new sounds while keeping one foot in the roots of what I do.

Fans can expect fresh songs sooner than they might think, along with plenty of shows where we mix the new material with the We Made Fire tracks.
