Album Review: Levi Foster, We Made Fire

By James Magill, OOTB Publications

I’m a little particular about country music. I like it old school—songs that tell a story, usually a sad one, with a guitar that has a little twang to it.

Unfortunately, the majority of modern country doesn’t quite fit the bill; however, Levi Foster’s debut album, We Made Fire (Banner Music, Middleground Music), scratched this particular itch.

His smooth baritone voice is reminiscent of some great country troubadours and the backing music is silky and soulful.

Ten songs about love, heartache, and life. It’s old-school country done modern, and that’s a good thing.

I’m not sure if it will catch mainstream radio on fire, but it evokes an image of a dusty old roadhouse—sawdust on the floor, the smell of beer in the air, as men in cowboy hats slow-dance with their ladies.

It’s a vibe you don’t get enough of these days.

I’ve been listening to this album over and over for the past week, and I don’t see that stopping anytime soon.
