Song Review: Black Moon Cult, "Stoned Ape"

Written By Christian Cole, OOTB Publications

Just last week, Toledo, Ohio deep-psych-rockers Black Moon Cult laid upon us “Stoned Ape,” the very first single from their highly anticipated first full-length LP Ophidian Future: The Children Of Yig and what we get is a nearly nine minute shot into the stratosphere.

With “Stoned Ape” the ever evolving spacemen in Black Moon Cult lay us into a slingshot and blast us headfirst towards the sun. Opening up with a laid back, spacious and filthy blues introduction, the track slowly begins to unfold into thumping bass and thundering drums, laying the foundation for the sonic journey ahead.

Over the course of the next seven minutes, we are taken through absolute heat inducing guitar solos, gritty vocals, bone breaking drums and booming, infectious bass lines. Anyone familiar with these boys knows that each release pushes the boundaries of expectation. Never limiting themselves, ever expansive, more and more massive with each and every step, and “Stoned Ape” is no exception to that cycle.

Not only have we been treated with the first taste of Ophidian Future: The Children Of Yig, but soon with it will be an equally-epic visual pairing; one I was very happy to witness.

The visual pairing for “Stoned Ape” feels like the Twilight Zone team bought the best bag of ganja on the market and wrote their own take on Planet Of The Apes. It is a masterpiece of B-Grade sci-fi madness with a tinge of humor and live footage to match. It is heady, ambitious, and by all means entertaining.

For long time fans and newcomers alike, the future direction of Black Moon Cult is hypnotic, enticing and adventurous on all fronts.

“Stoned Ape” is available now, everywhere music is streamed.
