Album Review: Carsex, Human Interest

Written By Christian Cole, OOTB Publications

Long Beach, California natives Carsex have just dropped their third EP Human Interest and it’s enough to keep a listener on their toes.

Human Interest starts off with “Sitting Ducks,” which proves to be a unique mix of punk and thrash, a stellar way to kick off the listen.

With tracks such as “Fuck This,” we see the punk leanings diminish a little and the thrash disappear, replaced instead with a stoner-rock groove that can be both infectious and fun. Something I noticed a lot through this listen.

We’re even given a little taste of goth/new wave with the track “Beyond the Trees,” trading the full fledged riffiness of previous tracks for a more ambient and moody appeal. It’s a well fitting sound on these guys, atmospheric and all consuming.

All and all, Carsex offers an intriguing mix of sounds, seemingly wandering wherever they’d like and simply making it work. With the shift in sound and direction, it almost plays more like a mixtape than a solidly defined EP, but I say that in a charming way.

Human Interest boasts no lack of exploration and showcases a band in its youth dialing in their sound, an all in all enjoyable and diverse listen from start to finish.
