Top 5 Feature: Devy Kay

Devy Kay is a self-made, lyrical, authentic hip-hop artist from Mansfield, Ohio.

At 23-years-old, Devy Kay has so far released four albums and numerous singles; his latest release being BONA FIDE—an album completely produced and engineered from top to bottom by Devy himself.

Devy began writing raps at 14-years-old, but didn’t begin publicly rapping until he was 18. After his senior year of high school, he saved up for his first studio equipment and released his first venture OUTSIDE, a 9-song EP with instrumentals produced by “Outsiderr Beats,” a young producer established in the UK.

At 19-years-old, after the release of his first project, Devy began attempting to make his own beats, drawing his inspiration from Dr. Dre, Russ, Mac Miller and multiple other artists and producers.

Having to teach himself how to make beats, and drawing from his own musical taste, Devy Kay has surely created an authentic production style truly unique of his own—with hip-hop style drums, infused with EDM Riddim-like samples and triplet percussion, the voice of Devy Kay glides elegantly over the minimal sub bass and grabs your attention with iambic flows and unique views on life.

Devy doesn’t shy away from speaking his true reality. His music contains lyrics about working a job, bills, childhood, poverty, family drama, personal and mental struggles, relationships, drug use, and much more.

“I think the point of being an artist is to take off the mask of your wounds and be completely vulnerable. Show the world the side you never show. True strength comes from being able to show your flaws and own them, to not be ashamed of who you are or how you feel. I take my things like that and put them into my music and hope someone relates,” says Kay.

His newest album, BONA FIDE, stresses his struggle adapting to new environments and pushing himself through constant adversity, while also having to be his own superhero.

With a signature flow and cocky sound, Devy emphasizes his swagger & confidence saying he’s “BONA FIDE” no matter what type of situation or pressure he’s under.

All the writing, recording, beats, and mixing were done by Devy, showcasing his abilities, not only as an artist and rapper, but also a producer and engineer.

Only adding more fuel to his fire, you can see Devy’s improvements through all of his projects in chronological order, and he has plenty more in the tank.

Recently, Devy has been recording another album with his hometown friend and artist, “Clutch 3D.” These two, having been born in small-town Ohio, moved to Columbus, Ohio to chase bigger dreams with their music.

“The best music of my life hands down,” says Kay when asked about his upcoming project with Clutch. “We all are super stoked to hear the final product when it’s released.”

Devy’s inspiration stems from multiple rappers, producers, and popular pop music of the 2000’s and 2010’s. Devy likes to listen to albums from front to back, that’s his favorite way to enjoy music to truly hear the whole piece of work from whoever he is listening to. That’s one reason Devy Kay mainly drops full albums.
