Interview: Bridges Ablaze preview new single, discuss music videos and next plans including new EP

Written By Neil Shumate, OOTB Publications

Dynamic two-member Austin, Texas’ rockers Brien Allen and Ruben Zamora, known collectively as Bridges Ablaze, have been making a name for themselves in the realm of hard rock—especially visually in the form of music videos.

The djent-elmen (pronounced “gentlemen”) took time for this OOTB interview to discuss the significance of music videos, their recent single “Heartless,” favorite directors, the next single “Frozen” out this Friday, plans through 2025 and more.

Your most recent song and video for “Heartless” is phenomenal! Especially that solo in the pouring rain and the extra behind-the-scenes look is really cool. How did everything come together for imagery to match the song itself so well?

Thank you so much! We really enjoyed making it! The solo was actually pretty difficult to pull off with all of the rain and hair!

Honestly, the entire visual came from a conversation between the band and the director. We just discussed what the song meant to us, and suggested maybe rain-based visuals.

The director, who has a background in videography and film, ended up converting his garage into a humid mud pit for the day and it worked out shockingly well!

Having a stream of excellent music videos to accompany your singles, why do you think it’s important to combine your music with videos and to keep the art of music video production alive and well?

We feel it's an additional way to connect with fans. Visually, you can tell a story or set an atmosphere in ways far beyond just sound.

Also, from a marketing standpoint, you get a lot more out of releases if you spearhead them with a music video.

We also really enjoy making music videos for the sake of it—we always have a lot of fun working with our crew and team!

Is there a film director you admire most? If so, who and why them?

Oh, wow. What a question! Yes—many.

If I had to select one right now, for the sake of brevity, I'd say maybe Christopher Nolan or even James Cameron.

I admire them because of how far they take their artistry. James Cameron visited the depths of the Marianas Trench in a bathyscaphe, and Christopher Nolan collaborated with famous physicist Kip Thorne for his movie Interstellar

I admire artists who go to the extremes for the sake of their artistry.

Your next single “Frozen” releases this Friday. How would you describe the song as being darker and heavier—lyrically or musically or both?

Both lyrically and musically. It's written and performed on 8-string guitars, so it inherently has a very deep sound to it in terms of pitch, and has of minor theory in it also. Lyrically, it's a darker song because it's about the ending of a friendship.

How and why did you seek out Rui to design the “Frozen” artwork?

We sought him out because we are enormous fans of his work! He's designed killer artwork for both Dayseeker and Darko (US) that we love.

We figured he'd be able to nail the aesthetic going forward. Turns out, we had a lot of visual overlap with our preferences!

It's been a wonderful creative process working with him.

What are the band’s current plans in the short-term and in the long-term the rest of the year?

We will release two more singles with music videos, and then our EP drops at the end of the year. We will be playing more shows this year, also!

Is there anything you’d like to add?

Stay true to yourself, and never give that up because someone wants you to.
