As someone with a varied and eclectic taste in music, I find enjoyment in a wide range of genres. However, writing this review proved to be a challenge, because of the disparity of two different aspects of the music.
Tetrarch is a band I hadn't previously explored, but I was eager to give them a chance. Always willing to and hoping to find a new favorite.
The Ugly Side of Me (Napalm Records) delivers ten tracks of blistering guitar work, killer drums, and industrialized metal. The music is undeniably good. Listening to it in the car, I found myself energized and pumped, ready to take on the day.
What detracts from the experience for me are the vocals. This might be my "old man yelling at the clouds" moment, but every song features vocals laden with studio effects, and it drives me crazy. It diminishes the impact of the music and prevents me from fully immersing myself in the album.
I made an effort to listen to this album three times, and each time, the vocals became more frustrating. While the music evokes early NIN and Stabbing Westward vibes, the vocals just detract from the experience.
Again, this is a personal perspective, but it's my review. Give it a listen this Friday and see what you think.
