Cincinnati native and accomplished actor Kurt Deimer is dipping his toes in the music world with the release of his double full-length debut: 17-track And So it Begins... (Bald Man Records).
While known for his role alongside Jamie Lee Curtis in John Carpenters 2018 Halloween, Kurt has also been no stranger to the stage. Having spent some time on the road with artists including: Geoff Tate, Drowning Pool, Skid Row, Sebastian Bach and appearing on the Monsters of Rock Cruise, and most recently with Buckcherry and Steel Panther, it’s hard to say he has any lack of experience. Deimer and his band will also join rock icons TESLA this summer.
While Deimer has rightfully earned his place in the world of acting, it never seems to go well when an actor decides to lend a hand to the music world, and sadly this album is no change of pace.
While 17 tracks is quite a large body of work for a first release, it was quite hard to find any shining moments. The lyrics feel very weak and cliched, bordering on corny at times.
I found myself feeling like I was stuck inside of a Ford F-150 commercial for the entirety of my listen, being as all the riffs just feel bland and forced and so commercially produced it just felt unnatural.
Frankly, I was looking forward to the album ending with two covers, banking on some familiarity and an interesting take on two great oldies. The album wraps up with a rendition of Pink Floyd’s “Have a Cigar” bleeding into the Doors’ classic “Riders on The Storm” and both, to be entirely frank, are tasteless.
The majority of the album is delivered in this almost William Shatner-esque tone that is honestly impossible to take seriously, especially on the album’s closing track.
I think it’s great that Deimer is trying his thing and extending his hand into other arts, but it just doesn’t work for me whatsoever. All the while, I’ll be looking forward to the next time we get to see him take to the silver screen.
