Album Review: Friend Of A Friend, Desire!

Written By Brandi Genzen, OOTB Publications

Friend Of A Friend has released its third album, Desire! (Earth Libraries), now available. This unique collection of songs features plenty of synths, rhythms and other eerie sounds to send chills down your spine.

The alt-rock folky vibe usually doesn’t hit me in this manner, but I instantly felt my hairs on end. It's almost other dimensional on a whole.

Having researched after hearing the album, I was not overly surprised that the recording location wound up being in a secluded Victorian mansion in Illinois.

Receiving a call from the owner three days in, Friend Of A Friend were told that the house carried stories of being haunted and watched by the paranormal community as far back as the early 1900s; actually, being the site of the first documented exorcism in U.S. history.

Duo Claire Molek and Jason Savsani decided to continue to record the album at the mansion even after having experienced paranormal activity first hand.

In doing so, they created quite a hauntingly cinematic record half defined by the location and environment. It is a mixed energy of the living and another plane of existence.

All in all I enjoyed it thoroughly. Desire! gave me a mix of Tracy Bonham, Sheryl Crow and a splash of Norman Bates via Psycho…. Take a journey on this trippy and spooky ride.

Friend Of A Friend performs at Rumba Cafe in Columbus, Ohio on May 12 with Cat Ridgeway.
