In celebration of the band’s latest album release, Neon Trees kicked off their 18-date Sink Your Teeth Tour last night in Columbus, Ohio at Newport Music Hall.
Having an original lineup since 2007, the band sounded unified as ever with crowd engaging showmanship from dancing (with fast spins and tip toe balancing), microphone stand twirling vocalist Tyler Glenn.
The Utah band delivered a strong hour-and-a-half show with their dancy pop-rock New Wave anthems that have propelled them to alternative music heights throughout their 16 years as a band.
Here are some takeaways from the show:
Glenn told the crowd: “If you’re feeling small, know that you are not. I want you to feel big after leaving this show.”
The crowd loved Neon Trees’ cover of The Human League’s “Don’t You Want Me” with a vocal solo by drummer Elaine Bradley.
During “Lessons In Love” and “El Diablo,” Glenn intentionally collapsed to his knees finishing the songs.
Glenn commented that he has been through a lot the past 10 years [including a health scare in Nov. 2020 when he suffered a stroke], but the only constant for him has always been music, and getting to play music with his band elevates him.
First time ever performing “Paper Cuts” live.
Before performing acoustic song “Acting”—during which the crowd waved their cell phone lights—Glenn told attendees that he came out 10 years ago and is still trying to feel comfortable in his own body. He said: “Stop making us queer people the boggeyman and the enemy; just let us love and fuck who we want.”
After “Acting,” Glenn told the crowd: “I don’t care what political side you’re on, there’s nothing wrong with the LGBTQ plus community. Stop bothering us and we will stop bothering you.”
Many songs performed, including: “Animal,” “Sleeping With A Friend,” “Everybody Talks,” “I Love You (But I Hate Your Friends),” “Songs I Can’t Listen To,” “Bad Dreams,” “New Best Friend.”
Openers The Tisburys, who Neon Trees discovered on TikTok, performed a lengthy supporting set with songs from their upcoming album A Still Life Revisited along with tracks from Exile On Main Street and others.
The Philadelphia band had a solid 90’s rock-and-roll vibe with comparisons to Gin Blossoms, Death Cab and even moments of The Stones and Bob Dylan.
The tour continues through the end of April.
