There is anger woven throughout the new concept album from Whitechapel: Hymns in Dissonance (Metal Blade Records). The band’s ninth album, which releases tomorrow, has crisp guitars coupled with the front and center heavy sound of drums, taking listeners on a violent ride from start to finish.
Phil Bozeman’s guttural vocals are the definitive element that climbs on top of the production and claims it to be a unique offering that will entertain old and new fans alike.
A storyline about a power-hungry individual who amasses a cult to carry out his bidding carries the ten punishing tracks through themes of depravity, rage, sin, and unflattering reflections of our own nature.
The constant aggression and curious nature of the dynamic songwriting takes the listener through rhythmic pacing that is sure to satisfy the craving for quality metal.
Opening with “Prisoner 666,” the tone is set for what is an outright assault that never lets up. It hits with this immense power that’s dialed in such a way as to whet the appetite for what’s to come.
From there, the namesake of the record is offered up, and the discordant nature of “dissonance” is truly only found here by the dizzying impact of the music itself.
This record is absolutely worth a spin. I’d be wary of getting in the pit with Whitechapel on stage, but I’m old.
“Nothing Is Coming For Any Of Us” is a notable favorite.
Their headlining tour in the US kicks off March 18th in Raleigh, North Carolina.
