Album Review: Judicator, Concord

Written By Brandi Genzen, OOTB Publications

Judicator is a power metal band that was formed in 2012 from Utah, Arizona and California. I am ashamed to admit this was my first time listening to one of their albums; I cant believe I’ve been asleep on this group, because, wow, have I been missing out!

Judicator is releasing its 7th full-length album Concord tomorrow. The album’s lyrics focus on constant struggles of life, both past and present—topics of family trees and history, faith and loyalty, highlighting both the beauty and pain over the centuries.

Concord begins with the song “Call Us To Slumber.” The intro alone had me geared up before the first word had been sung; any song that starts off with that much energy instantly has my attention (head banging and driving is safe for pros). The first song was over six minutes long and it went by too quick! So much texture.

In my opinion songs are too short nowadays. I want the whole story, not a preview. “Call Us To Slumber” gave me all and more. This is a song that demands you listen to its entirety, not a song you skip after two minutes in. To say I was excited may be an understatement.

On to the 8th track, which is the title song “Concord.” This song has a video, so I of course had to see the artists at work. Again I was taken back. The song is hypnotic and has a heroic feel to it. I had feelings of wanting to pick up arms and fight for justice.

The video, however, was just the band jamming—no theatrics, no need to glam it up; having no costumes or gimmicks, it was just the members up there showing their perfected craft! In the video when they come together and sing as a choir is perfect.

Concord will take you through tales of family and traditions, of land and people. Some songs reference tragedy, including “Weeping Willow” and “Imperial.”

You will also get little surprises, like you do 3 mins and 45 secs into “A Miracle Of Life” when a saxophone comes in.

The whole album is an amazing listen. It even ends with another little surprise having a folky western vibe. Do not miss out on this one!
