Album Review: Jinjer, Duél

Written By Steve Jones, OOTB Publications

Jinjer’s fifth full-length album Duél was released on Napalm Records this month and the Ukrainian band make their case for "metal album of the year"—pure aggression from the rip!

“Tantrum” opens the record with an aggressive ear opening attack on the senses.

“Hedonist” slows the pace and breaks into lead vocalist Tatiana Shmayluk singing a beautiful melody over a slick guitar riff fusing metal with a jazzy twist. Life is short, mix it up a bit.

“Rogue” slams with chaotic rhythm and some of the best drumming on the album.

“Tumbleweed” brings some lore of the softness over brooding feel that we’ve come to expect from Jinjer. Great lyrics and a nice chorus leads way to rage! Let’s go!

“Green Serpent” brings another stellar vocal performance! Break it down for me and take me to some new places!

“Kafka” is poignant; this one took me in a direction I didn’t expect!

“Dark Blue” shows absolutely  killer musicianship; this one really showcases the bands creativity!

“Fast Draw” lives up to its name with an intense onslaught of relentless momentum!

“Someone’s Daughter,” I met her once.

“A Tongue So Sly” is brootal! There’s not much else to say!

“Duél” I love the way this tunes bounces between the perspective of each combatant!

Jinjer continues to release some of the most interesting music in the realm of heavy music. There is no shortness of greatness from Tatiana on this new record, which took about two years to make, but I think this album really showcases the band's ability to create interesting sonic landscapes and keep you guessing with each track!

Jinjer has released a fantastic album that’s just missing that one standout single that could elevate them to new heights. I hope to catch them on tour to see how this new batch of songs fits into the show!
