From 2019’s Dogrel and onward, Dublin, Ireland based Fontaines D.C. have continued to pour out albums that evolve sonically with each step forward, and with Friday, Oct. 15’s release of their fifth album, Dopamine Chamber, we hear the latest continuation of that trend.
Following 2024’s Romance, Dopamine Chamber moves further into new sonic territory.
Skinty Fia (2022) was more guitar heavy in its instrumentation than what Romance was, and Dopamine Chamber strays even further from that sound, but it’s so well done.
While Dopamine Chamber does step away from the sounds of the album that started leading them further into fame, it does so sensibly, respectfully.
Sonically speaking, in comparison to its predecessors, Dopamine Chamber is darker, dreamier, and leans heavily into a modern post-punk darkness. Its soundscapes are sometimes reminiscent of The Cure.
What Fontaines D.C. deliver here is quite frankly a masterclass in ambience and delivery, showcasing a band that has not once remained content in staying stale.
The air that surrounds Dopamine Chamber may be somber, but the end product is teeming with catharsis and relatability. Dopamine Chamber is a beautiful and mysterious blend of accessibility and sadness unmatched; both lyrically and instrumentally.
As someone who has followed the band on and off since 2022, it’s incredible to hear the progress. This isn’t a band that is shy of its roots, just one that is equal parts comfortable leaning into new territory, and, what we end up with is an incredible record from start to finish.
Get out this week and stream Dopamine Chamber on your favorite streaming service, or maybe support your favorite record shop. Either way, don’t miss out on a record that borders on flawless from some gents well deserving of their flowers.
