Seattle indie rock quintet Minus The Bear celebrated the 20th Anniversary of their second released album Menos el Osoon Friday, September 4 at Newport Music Hall in Columbus, Ohio.
Not only did they perform the 45-minute 2005 album in full, but they also treated the crowd to some of their other proggy math rock favorites, including: “Into The Mirror,” “Knights,” “Spritz! Spritz!” “Let’s Play Clowns,” and others, to round out a fantastic 90-minute set with little banter.
The current tour brings the band together for a reunion after what was a seven year hiatus following their 2018 farewell tour and final album release, Voids in 2017.
“With this being the second run of this tour, we are now celebrating the 21st Anniversary of the album,” smiled vocalist Jake Snider, after complimenting the crowd as “beautiful.”
The lengthy break between tours showed no evidence of them sounding rusty live, but instead proved their veteran status in music, allowing their talents to continue thriving on stage… and hopefully again in the studio someday?
Richmond, Virginia’s Keep—performing for the first time in Columbus—opened with primarily mellow shoegaze sludge and vocals reminiscent of a Thom Yorke, soft Chino Moreno combo, sung by the drummer.
A bit of The Jesus And Mary Chain, Slowdive and Explosions In The Sky, with moments of D’arcy Wretzky-esque dominate bass.
Solid and tight knit. Patchy, fuzzy dim lighting effects appropriately set the mood and atmosphere to match the quartet’s music.
