Supporting his third studio album—Could Be Tonight—released earlier this year, hip hop artist, singer, producer Hulvey stopped in Columbus, Ohio at Newport Music Hall on Friday, Sept. 25 as part of his 33 date headline tour, with opening support from Kijan Boone and indie tribe.
Some musicians are subtle and reserved about faith, religion and beliefs; however, these musicians are loud, proud and blunt about it—such artists are often spotlighted and heard on alternative Christian music radio station RadioU.
It was a night of laud, worship and gospel as the Christian rap performers connected with the crowd, praising God and Jesus through song, scripture and speech.
Passionate fans often closed their eyes and reached both arms up toward the sky while rapping along and waggling to the loud heavy beats.
Before Hulvey took the stage, indie tribe’s DJ Mykael V discussed Freedom Partners and its mission with International Justice Mission (IJM) to end ongoing modern day slavery and to protect children from violence.
Hulvey was joined onstage by a live guitarist, keyboardist and a drummer, which enhanced the live tracks and beats.
Hulvey rapped fast and crisp during his hip hop songs and sang smoothly during his slower R&B pop songs; often crouching down, giving it his all. Opening artists occasionally joined Hulvey on stage for surprise performance snippets during the set.
The 27 year old pointed out that his wife, Rachael, and his two sons were traveling with him on tour; he dedicated his performance of “True” to her.
In his rap song “World Hunger,” he mentions hypocrisy in Christianity: “And I know it’s hard to face it / You a Christian, but how you a closet racist? / The problem is the occupation / No shepherds in the field, just proclamations.”
During the set, a videographer followed Hulvey across the stage with a live video feed and image effects displayed on the video wall behind the stage, which the crowd seemed to love.
Earlier in the evening, Kijan Boone brought a lively performance with modern beats and five member indie tribe brought the ruckus with old school throwback beats. Neither disappointed.
The extensive tour began mid-August and concludes at the end of this month in Hulvey’s hometown of Atlanta, Georgia.
