I think my introduction to Gavin Adcock—or at least the first song that caught my attention when his music played in the background—was “A Cigarette.” I think I first heard it during one of those late night shifts, alone in a huge warehouse, and I may have hit repeat a few times.
This was the kind of country music I enjoyed: the kind that told a story with real emotion. A few of his other songs really connected with me, so I was excited to check him out live on Friday, Aug. 28 at KEMBA Live! in Columbus, Ohio.
It was an outdoor show, and I had a lawn ticket. I was a little over a week post-surgery, with my foot in a walking cast, so I was ecstatic to make my way to KEMBA’s ADA seating area at the top of the lawn, with a great view of the stage.
It was a beautiful night, and the crowd was amazing and energetic. Rowdy. Beer flowed, and later in the night, beer flew through the air.
Corey Kent and The Creekers both opened, and while I didn’t know any of their songs, I was still able to enjoy their sets.
Gavin Adcock took the stage around 9:15 p.m. or so and played an amazing set—more than 20 songs, nearly one after another. He announced the title of each song before launching into it.
The crowd sang along with almost every song as Gavin danced around onstage and performed. He sounded great, danced like a drunk man having a great time, and played to the crowd.
In the last month or so, Adcock has released a new song almost every week, and he played a lot of the new ones, along with his hits.
“Need To” is a phenomenal song that I recommend you check out. “I’ve Got 3” also. The band played a great cover of Hank Jr.’s “Dinosaur” and closed with “Last One To Know” and “Run Your Mouth.”
Beer cups—some empty, some full, and some in between—flew throughout the air as the crowd maintained a raucous, rowdy party vibe.
When it was over, I text my wife: “Best show I’ve seen this year.”
