For 50 odd years now, Canada’s Neil Young has lived out a stellar career with a trend of doing one thing and one thing only: whatever the fuck he wants.
From folk to rock and country, all the way down to his techno laden 1982 Trans LP, Neil has managed to keep himself busy making records as he pleases, and 9 times out of 10, it works beautifully.
Last year saw the release of Talkin To The Trees, his first record alongside his new outfit “The Chrome Hearts,” and it was a stellar release that teetered along the lines of psychedelia, folk and rock.
Now, we are about to witness round two from Neil Young & The Chrome Hearts, a seven song album titled Second Song; and it manages to be a fantastic follow up to the magic found on the first record.
This record showcases Neil’s never ending ability to dish out incredible songwriting with a backing band who delivers exactly what he needs.
Neil and the band tug at the heart strings with a slow and smoked out folky fog, with lyrics that show Young’s age, but not in a bad way. Rather, we get to see Neil address his aging in a very reflective manner, it is poise and it is precise, his songwriting just as sharp as ever, and his band just as tight.
As a longtime fan who spent his youth beside campfires soundtracked by Neil Young and his varying styles, it’s refreshing to say that as I approach 30, he is still soundtracking those exact same moments.
Second Song carries the same familiar magic first felt on records like Harvest, but aged like a fine wine or bourbon. It is beautiful, introspective, slightly psychedelic and best of all, it’s cohesive from front to back.
Young and his band carry us through seven tracks balancing between folk and psychedelia in perfect formation, laying down a somewhat short, but poignant record for longtime fans.
Get out this Friday, Sept. 18 and get yourself a copy of Neil Young & The Chrome Hearts’ Second Song. I personally can’t wait to lay needle to vinyl, and I think diehard fans or even casual listeners will feel the exact same way.
