For decades now, four legendary acts have remained at the pinnacle of thrash metal music: Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax.
After ten long years, fans are finally about to see a new record from the latter.
Anthrax makes their return tomorrow, Friday, Sept. 18, with new album Cursum Purficio (Megaforce/Nuclear Blast), and longtime fans will find little to no disappointment.
With classic thrash riffs, Joey Belladonna’s signature vocal delivery, and a tightly trained rhythm section, we receive a fairly well rounded LP.
Thrash has never been the most explorative genre, leaning closely into the formula that makes the genre what it is and always has been, and I think fans prefer it that way.
While nothing on this record feels particularly inventive, it is undoubtedly a solid and long awaited return for fans of the genre.
Classic Anthrax forty years in is a strong enough feat at anything, as bands like Metallica drop records every handful of years that are fairly unimpressive, phoned in, and mostly devoid of life; it’s nice to feel that one of the Big Four is still doing it with some class.
If you’ve long awaited the return of one of thrash metal’s biggest acts, you will likely find plenty of joy in Cursum Purficio. Anthrax is back, and they still have what it takes to make a pretty damn solid record.
