For more than three decades, hip-hop icon Nelly has blessed fans with his talent, winning three Grammys and nine Billboard Music Awards through his extensive career, which began with the group St. Lunatics in 1993.
On Tuesday, Aug. 4, he performed in Columbus, Ohio as part of the annual summer Ohio State Fair Concert Series at the WCOL Celeste Center.
Nelly impressed the packed venue—he brought a full throttle performance and the whole place was jumpin’.
Backed by DJ Trife, he was joined on stage by fellow St. Lunatics’ collaborator Lavell “City Spud” Webb. Nelly introduced him, “Remember when I wore that bandaid? Well, this is the guy with me here now that I wore it for.”
The St. Louis’ hometown duo, both sporting new Ohio State Fair shirts, jovially performed nostalgic songs that appealed not only to Millennials and Gen X-ers, but to the youngsters in the crowd too.
Nelly, 51, rapped the Hip-Hop hits that propelled him to the top and he sang his R&B, Pop, Country-fusion crowd favorites, with a setlist focused on 2000 breakthrough album Country Grammer and 2002 stand out Nellyville.
Some songs performed included: “Air Force Ones,” “Hot In Heree,” “Batter Up,” “Just A Dream,” “Dilemma,” “Grillz,” “Cruise remix,” “Over And Over,” “Ride Wit Me,” “E.I.,” “Shake Ya Tailgfeather,” “Pimp Juice.”
The music legend wore shades and occasionally slid them down to glance at the adoring crowd with a wide appreciative smile.
A true showman and class act; Nelly paused with his hand over his heart to tell the cheering, dancing crowd: “We are really thankful for all of you!”
Before Nelly took the stage, DJ Trife got the crowd fired up and moving with a continuous hour-long mix of past and present popular hip-hop songs.
The Ohio State Fair continues every day through Sunday, Aug. 9.
