Goo Goo Dolls and Neon Trees contrasted a day of gloomy, rainy weather with their cheerful, sunshiny performance for a packed house at The Rose Music Center in Huber Heights, Ohio on Wednesday, Aug. 12.
Goo Goo Dolls brought all their modern rock jams; an expansive catalogue of radio hits and fan favorites that everyone instantly recognized. After all, they hold the radio record for Most Top 10 Singles with a total of 16 No. 1 and Top 10 Singles.
Packed into a minimal banter performance which exceeded an hour and a half, the live setlist of nostalgic ballads and mainstream hits—with some being acoustic versions—included: “Iris,” “Slide,” “Broadway,” “Black Ballon,” “Name,” “Dizzy,” “Miracle Pill,” “Fallin’ Down,” “Give A Little Bit” (Supertramp), “Here Is Gone,” “January Friend” and many more.
The successful Buffalo, New Yorkers have been on the grind since 1986, with 13 albums released for the masses.
After forty years as a band, and now entering their 60’s, vocalist, guitarist John Rzeznik and vocalist, bassist Robby Takac still have it. Rockstars.
Both often matched the energy and live sound with that from the first time I saw them perform, almost three decades ago: A freezing November evening in 1998 at Newport Music Hall in Columbus, Ohio as part of their Dizzy Up The Girl Tour, tickets were $15.
The stage lighting was impressive and engaging, setting the appropriate mood per song. When Rzeznik briefly paused to speak between songs, it was with friendly humor. Takac kept the crowd engaged with his animated faces and ecstatic energy.
Utah’s Neon Trees opened the night with an hour of appealing, energetic, alternative pop rock to warm up the audience.
With early encouragement by vocalist Tyler Glenn, everyone eventually got out of their seats and clapped, danced and sang along to hits “Everybody Talks,” “Sleeping With A Friend,” “Animal,” “Secret,” and Neon Trees’ fun cover of The Human League’s early 80’s hit “Don’t You Want Me,” which featured a brief vocal solo by drummer and backing vocalist Elaine Bradley.
They also performed my personal favorite Trees’ song… “Paper Cuts.”
Glenn gratefully told the crowd: “It’s a dream to open for the Goo Goo Dolls.”
The extensive summer tour runs through September.
