Midwest Gen Z indie-punk sibling trio,—two older sisters and younger brother—Loki’s Folly, recently released new gritty, grungy song “Midnight Mystery,” which follows their latest singles “Retribution” and “King Of All Alone.”
The current singles were produced by Soul Asylum lead guitarist and backing vocalist Ryan Smith and their 2023 debut album, Sisu (Robot Kitten Records), also included collaborative production by Ed Ackerson (The Replacements, The Jayhawks), Kevin Bowe (Etta James, Jonny Lang) and John Fields (Jonas Brothers, Andrew W.K.)
In this OOTB Interview with Loki’s Folly vocalist, guitarist Annie Kuchenmeister, the Minneapolis’ native discusses punk music, lyrics, challenges, dream tours, the future and more.
What is it about the punk rock genre that appeals to you most; for example, why not metal or pop?
The thing about punk music that appeals to me the most is the raw expression and ability to convey strong emotions in a way that feels very genuine and intense.
I have a lot of big feelings on a lot of things and punk music provides a very succinct way to express that.
That being said, we definitely all have an affinity for lots of different genres of music and those definitely influence our music and approach to songwriting.
What do you hope listeners take away from your music and lyrics?
For me, lyrics and songwriting are all about processing feelings and thoughts that I have about the world that I struggle to communicate verbally.
My hope is that listeners can have some of that same processing and recovery that songwriting provides me and feel comforted by feeling the same things.
Since forming, what have been some challenges you’ve faced (or still face) and how did you (or are you) overcome those challenges?
I think one of the biggest challenges is that we are a band made up completely of introverts.
The social media marketing, self promotion, and networking aspect are the hardest to get done and get done well, since it doesnt really come naturally to any of us.
It’s one of those things that to overcome it, you kind of have to just do it and accept that it’s better to get it done at all, even if it’s imperfect or awkward.
What are three bands or artists you’d love to share the stage with?
Some dream bands to tour with that are playing right now are: Amyl and the Sniffers, Mannequin Pussy, and Nova Twins.
It's really exciting to see so many bands with really awesome women rocking the stage and it's so inspiring to see them touring nationally and internationally.
Where do you see yourselves as a band in 10 years?
It would be amazing to still be working together and making music; and, it would be especially awesome to have some more cool tours under our belt, maybe even some of those dream tours from the earlier question.
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
I'll add that, as we all know, it's a really troubling time in the world on all aspects globally, politically, and socially.
We are so lucky to get to have the opportunity to make music and express our opinions and do our best to make a difference, and it's so important that we all continue to exercise this right and do whatever we can to fight the power, protect our neighbors, and protect each other in this very chaotic world.
