Dinosaur Jr. have been laying down loud and raucous rock and roll for the better part of four decades, even leaning in at times to experimentation, while still staying true to their explosive formula.
Tomorrow—Friday, Aug. 28–we will see the release of the latest LP from the trio in the form of a record titled, There Near (Jagjaguwar).
Loud, abrasive, catchy. Thundering drums, booming bass and frontman J. Mascis’ searing fuzzed out lead guitar makes for one of the best Dinosaur Jr. records in recent years.
As a long time fan, this album is an ode, a nod.
It feels fitting, sonically speaking, that the band just came off a string of live shows playing fan favorite Where You Been?in its entirety, as There Near feels similar in sound, in many ways, while still retaining it’s integrity and branching into other aspects of the band’s impressive repertoire.
Not only are the tracks fantastic in general, but the mix is absolutely stellar. Everything feels well balanced while not being so polished that it doesn’t feel like a Dinosur Jr. record.
Lou Barlows’ bass stands out a lot to me; it sounds and feels massive and sits so perfectly in the mix.
It’s impressive to hear a band so far into their career still pumping out some of their best work to date. The band feels tight, and on their A Game.
I think longtime fans of Dinosaur Jr. will be ecstatic to get their hands on this new record. There Near stands out amongst the last few releases, and I can see it quickly becoming a classic record for the aging rockers.
