Song Review: Hayden Haddock, "I'll Bring The Matches"

By James Magill, OOTB Publications

I have a soft spot for late-‘80s and early-‘90s country music. I detested it back then, though—crammed into my mother’s old Buick Regal, clouded with smoke from her Marlboro Red cigarette. But now when I hear that era of country music, it makes me nostalgic and happy.

Hayden Haddock’s “I’ll Bring The Matches” (Good Company Entertainment / CmdShft)—releasing this Friday, July 10–is a throwback to that style and timeframe.

The song is a revenge tale told from a jilted lover’s perspective; Haddock tells a story about making sure he’s someone’s last kiss, with a twang.

When I first heard the track, I couldn’t help but think he was channeling the voice of Joe Diffie; not eerily similar, but enough that it made me smile.

It’s a catchy tune that could spark some modern country radio play.

I’ve listened to it a few times in the last week, trying to get a feel for it, and sometimes find myself humming the tune at work.
