Joining together for the Raised On Radio Tour, Wynonna Judd and Melissa Etheridge stopped at The Rose Music Center in Huber Heights, Ohio on Tuesday, June 30 with opening support from Maggie Rose.
The Extreme Heat Warning didn’t prevent droves of fans from filing in to see the trailblazing women in music perform at the covered outdoor venue.
Attendees were accommodated by the venue with the option to bring up to four sealed plastic bottles or an empty soft plastic bottle to fill up at free water refill stations. The Rose also had water misting tents on site to use for cooling.
The tour is aptly titled “Raised On Radio” as both Grammy Award winning artists performed most of their mid-80s to mid-90s chart-topping radio hits.
Wynonna also scattered in quite a few classic songs from The Judds and they both performed tracks from their new albums: Melissa Etheridge’s RISE, released in March and Wynonna’s The Hard Truth, releasing Oct. 2.
Now in their 60’s, both iconic voices sounded remarkable and powerfully energetic, never staggering or wavering.
Etheridge kicked off her set with a positive eruption, shouting fiery lyrics: “Don’t you want a woman, who can rock your soul!,” from the lead single on her latest album.
Not only can she sing, but she’s also an underrated guitarist, showcasing an exceptional bluesy rock solo during new song, “To Be A Woman,” as she walked away from the mic and greeted fans from stage left to stage right.
The artist with 17 albums also strummed her heart out during a performance of her very first album’s second single “Like The Way I Do,” and later she jumped on the drum riser to perform an extraordinary dual percussion solo.
A unified clap along solo vocal performance of Janis Joplin’s “Mercedes Benz” fired up the crowd. Etheridge told the crowd, “since 1988 we’ve always performed [the song] for crowds around Columbus.”
Other songs included: “Come To My Window,” “I Want To Come Over,” “I’m The Only One” and new song “More Love,” during which Etheridge sat down on the edge of the stage and fans gathered around her for the piano ballad.
Judd closed the night with a bright stage production and a full backing band, bringing an energetic party-like atmosphere that made the crowd cheer, clap and dance.
Expressing her appreciation to all those in attendance, Judd thanked everyone for supporting women in music and showcased her audacious vocal variety, range and sustained pitch, backed by both lighter and upbeat music alike.
Behind the mic with her guitar, she often smiled wide, pointed and waved to fans as they sang along, telling the crowd she’s “a woman with attitude and a woman of faith.”
The five-time Grammy winner’s extensive setlist included solo Wynonna songs as well as some of The Judds’ hits released as a duo with her late mother, Naomi: “No One Else On Earth,” “I Saw The Light,” “Why Not Me,” “She Is His Only Need,” “Mama He’s Crazy,” “Born To Be Blue,” “Rock Bottom,” new song “Kentucky Queen” and more.
Nashville’s two-time Grammy nominated Maggie Rose opened the show with a solid half-hour set that included her Grace Potter collab, “Poison In My Well.”
Melissa Etheridge surprised fans and stepped on stage halfway through the song for an incredible sounding duet with Rose; the crowd roared. Rose, in disbelief, gleefully commented, “pinch me now!” as Etheridge exited.
The singer-songwriter told the crowd her one-year-old was backstage on tour with her and then dedicated new song “Gentle Man” to any one with children. She also performed “Red Shoes” from the upcoming album—titled Half Moon, out Aug. 14.
The set included her cover of Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me”—whom she originally recorded and released with Vince Gill—performed with her onstage backing vocalist and guitarist, MP Gannon.
Overall, albeit an uncomfortable muggy night, the trio of talented headliners were a force to be reckoned with and made for a phenomenal night of music, which excused the soupy temperatures.
The 27-date tour concludes early August.
