Saturday, July 25 brought a warm night of groovy reggae rock to the outdoor portion of Columbus, Ohio music venue KEMBA Live! for the Road Trippin’ Summer Tour.
Annapolis, Maryland’s Bumpin’ Uglies opened with a lively set of reggae and ska—the distinct signature reggae guitar chop syncopations dominated, with inclusion of sensational sax solos and layers of trumpet.
The band’s reggae interpretation of Radiohead’s “Creep” and a fast paced skate punk song closed their set for an overall well-received performance.
Boston based The Elovators’ laid back reggae rock soothed the crowd with Jackson Wetherbee’s spot on smooth rasp and the band’s passionate mellow groove.
The sextet’s catchy melodic choruses resonated with the crowd, especially during “Gimmie Love” and new song “Bills To Pay,” from their fifth album: Shark Belly Motel.
As the sun went down, the crowd packed in even more—filling the lawn and the pit with many fans wearing tie dyed shirts and some with long dreadlock hairstyles.
San Diego, California music fusion mainstays—since 1994–Slightly Stoopid ruled the summer night with their genre blending mix of reggae, rock, hip-hop, punk, blues and funk.
A large video wall was behind the band as the horns, percussion and keys were situated on a riser and below them were the band’s duo vocals with strings.
Just outside the heavily smoke filled stage, on both sides, were large skeletons chilling and hitting a doobie.
Having a jam band like following, crowd interactions were present, but limited, in order to get through a lengthy set of about twenty or so songs; the music rolled on throughout the night.
Fans jumped around and moved their bodies, twisted and turned, with smiling faces as laser lights protruding from the stage transformed the venue into an environment like that of an EDM dance party.
The tour concludes late August.
