Tenacious D was a big part of my post high school soundtrack. I had seen the skits and the HBO show, but that debut album was in the CD player of my 1995 Pontiac Grand Am for way longer than I want to admit.
I saw them live for the first time when they played with Weezer and Jimmy Eat World.
My buddy Jason McKinney bought the single greatest piece of concert merchandise I have ever seen: The Official Tenacious D cum rag.
A white terry cloth wash rag with a drawing of a unicorn and rainbow. Juvenile? Yes. Fucking hysterical? Also, yes.
Tenacious D And The Pick Of Destiny is 20 years old and I was lucky enough to attend a screening with Kyle Gass in attendance at Studio 35 Cinema and Drafthouse on Saturday, July 18.
The crowd was raucous, the movie raunchy and the atmosphere was jovial.
The audience sang along from the opening track of “Kickapoo,“ until the boss battle for pick and the sanctity of KG’s butthole.
The movie landed well amongst a group of fans.
Kyle Gass himself sat in the front of the theatre and answered fan’s questions for about 40 minutes, talked about what he was watching and listening to, told stories about meeting Jack Black.
Gass professed love for the area and introduced friends from the area.
He was asked what his dream blunt rotation would be. (Snoop, Willie Nelson and John Malkovich, if you’re interested.)
He was funny and poignant and more than willing to engage with the crowd.
Before and after the show, he met with fans and took pictures.
I stood in line for a bit and had a short conversation where he also called the cum rag the best piece of merchandise ever. He graciously took a picture with me and I went home happy.
A raunchy comedy with a bunch of like minded people made me want to go home and practice my cock pushups. You never know when you might need one and, “one is all you need.”
