On the heels of alternative active rock artist Sorry X releasing her debut album next Friday, July 24–Exes (SBG Records)—and before supporting Of Virtue and Savage Hands starting July 16 for the 27-date The Art Of Love & Power Tour; Phoenix, Arizona vocalist and songwriter Alexa Graves took time for an OOTB Interview to discuss the new album, performing live and more.
For a new fan being introduced to Sorry X, which two songs on Exes would you first recommend them to listen to, and why those two songs?
That’s such a tough one!
I would say start with “The Wrong One” (fest. Drowning Pool), because you’ll hear my sound come through, and it’s definitely an energetic and heavy track.
My second pick would be “Afterthought (rot),” because it’ll show you a much more vulnerable side to my album.
With the album being personal and revealing, what coping mechanisms did you use to escape that darkness, and has it helped you overcome?
To be completely honest, I went through a dark time during a period of writing this album and you’ll hear that in the opening track “Can You Hear Me?”.
I would say during writing that song, I felt like I was at a breaking point. I’m definitely in a better place now.
I’m still constantly learning and growing, but I’m hanging out with my family and friends more, asking for help, and reading a lot of inspiring stories and self-help books
I would say I feel a lot more confident now in my ability to overcome hard situations.
How did the collaboration with Tobin Esperance (Papa Roach, bass) come together and what or how did he contribute to the album?
Tobin heard my music through my manager [Gary Avila] (formerly Papa Roach’s manager) and loved it!
He had some really cool production and structural ideas for the songs I sent him.
I was super honored and Papa Roach is a huge inspiration to me.
With the tour launching soon, what can crowds except from your live performances?
I would say my live performance is where my music and personality shines the most. I love performing, it’s a gift.
I love meeting my fans and interacting with the crowd. My band and I always try to improve with every show and we definitely bring the energy.
Come rock out with us!
If you could sit down and interview any musician, who would that be and why them?
It’s funny, I’ve recently started watching a lot more interviews with musicians that I admire and I’ve learned a lot from it.
I might have to pick Adam Gontier of Three Days Grace. I’m a huge fan!
