While traveling city to city for the 31-date The Even More Outta Control Tour—alongside SOiL, Spineshank, (hed) p.e.—Nonpoint lead vocalist Elias Soriano took time for an OOTB Interview to answer questions about the band’s longevity, frequent touring and the future. He also touches on their upcoming 11th studio album The Last Word (361 Degrees Records), due out Sept. 18.
Nonpoint tours constantly and always bring the heat at live shows. How do you get through the tough days on the road with so much touring?
Reaching out to family and friends certainly helps.
Talking to my wife, daughter, or my brother, is huge in my ability to get through long tours and tough situations, without too much stress in the business.
They see everything really behind the scenes, so I know they understand the full scope when I need to work a problem out within my circle, because of things I may not be able to control at the moment.
So, family is huge.
But, also, relating to bandmates out here in real time is a huge tool that helps get through the thick brush when we hit those dense moments.
What is your inspiration and motivation to persevere as a band after nearly three decades as Nonpoint?
Of course the fans are a big part of our motivation through the years; but, the music and the creating… the ability and the opportunity to perform in front of people that appreciate your creativity is hard to ignore.
Creating a song is magic. That’s as simple as it can be put. People should be writing songs all the time.
It really does change who you are when you find that switch that turns itself on automatically, when you hear a piece of music or settlement that sparks the idea of a song. You can’t help but think of something that goes along with it or you have to race over to a voice recorder and hit record, because you know it’s magical.
That kind of gas can put 15 hours of miles behind the microphone, traveling until you finally stop and realize you’ve created a song you absolutely love.
It’s an amazing feeling. I wish it for everyone.
With the new album The Last Word releasing Sept. 18, what are four or five words you would use to describe the album?
No prisoners, ALL NONPOINT.
Let’s say, two decades from now, where do you see yourself then?
Hopefully on a beach somewhere in the Caribbean or Europe where the food is clean, the people are kind, my family feels safe and I celebrate each day like it was my last, surrounded by family and friends celebrating the same thing.
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Life isn’t going to always be easy, it’s not always going to make sense… but, if you’re just trying to do something good, something fun, something kind, something productive, something peaceful, something invigorating, something that you feel makes you better or happier in any direction [that] doesn’t take from, embarrass, hurt someone else in the process… then, what the hell are you waiting for?
Go do that shit.
