Dumb Waiter is an avant garde, noise rock, instrumental band. Stemming from Richmond, Virginia, this band first formed in 2012 and have 14 years together under their belt.
Change (Ossein Records)—Dumb Waiters’ newest release and sixth album—took me to another world.
Change has veered a little from their previous music released; Nick Crider (guitarist) said that he had lost the love of complex music.
The band decided to add vocals to the instrumentals, which was never previously done. After having many singers try out for the band, they decided on an alternate route.
Traveling in a smaller van with no extra space for a new member, Nick Crider (guitar) Tristan Brennis (saxophone) Keith Paul (bass) and Nathaniel Roseberry (drums) took a risk and used their own voices.
As I began listening to the first song, “The Sun,” I was sitting a little awestruck. The beginning melody was mesmerizing and otherworldly. Vocals kick in and instantly I was taken back to a time when The Doors were all the rage.
“Sound The Alarm” and “Gloat” also both took me for a psychedelic ride.
“Gloat,” with its slow intro then pounding instrumental woke me right up!
“Sound The Alarm” reminded me of hearing Pink Floyd’s The Wall for the first time. Had to give it a second listen to truly appreciate its complexity.
If you are up for a mind melting brain twisty, wild ride, Change is for you—out this Friday, July 31.
