Top 5 Feature: Devil Doves

Much like the Grand Canyon, the Devil Doves started out as a trickle in the desert—but, in Central Ohio.

Budding songwriter Junior Kauffman teamed up with high school baseball buddy Kyle "Headband" Davis and the duo hit the open mics.

The definitive sound of Junior's raspy vocals and anti-folk acoustic songwriting solidified when Kyle switched from djembe to trejon and their signature "clusterfolk" sound was formed.

After taking home an 8-song demo CD from the band, bass player and local troubadour Eric Nassau showed up to a show with his gear ready to play, unbeknownst to the duo.

The trio clicked and he continued to join them on and off for the next 18 months at their weekly gigs, earning him the nickname “Thunderstorm.”

After being selected for their local community festival, the trio had their first actual practice and then promptly and epically got rained out halfway through their set. The momentum, however, pushed them to release their self-titled first record and take their show on the road.

As fate would have it, the trio played a house party where they ran into fellow musician Jeff “Pretty Fingers” Straw.

Jeff played the keys and had the voice of an angel, so after a handful of jam sessions, Kyle baked him a cake and the quartet was complete.

Now, with four albums and a single under their belt, the Devil Doves continue to delight and surprise new listeners with their energetic live antics and ever evolving music.

Their latest record Parlor Tricks is available on all streaming services!
