As part of a nine-show jaunt, indie rock bands Spoon and The Beths stopped in Columbus, Ohio at a packed KEMBA Live! on Sunday, June 29 for their co-headlining tour with opening support from Squirrel Flower.
Austin, Texas indie stalwarts Spoon—which includes original 1993 members, vocalist Britt Daniel and drummer Jim Eno—rocked in style with Daniel’s distinct, mesmerizing vocals and the band’s catchy, diverse, tempo-changing rock-and-roll, bluesy-punk tones with layers of keys and scattered electronic effects.
The setlist included a couple tracks from their 2022 Grammy-nominated Best Rock Album Lucifer On The Sofa as well as other hits and familiar song picks from some of their other nine albums—“The Way We Get By,” “I Turn My Camera On,” “The Underdog,” “Got Nuffin’,” “Wild,” and others.
Canadian musician Dan Boeckner joined the band as a guest for vocals alongside Daniels for a couple songs, including a cover of Rolling Stones’ “Sway,” as part of Spoon’s nearly 90-minute back lit set.
Spoon is currently working on their next album and have released two new singles—“Chateau Blues,” “Guess I’m Fallin’ In Love,” and the song “Lose Control,” which has been debuted live this tour.
New Zealand’s The Beths’ set had newer songs from their 2025 fourth album release Straight Line Was A Lie,—which included “Metal,” “Roundabout,” “Joy”—but they also performed older songs from their 12-year history as a band, including: “Jump Rope Gazers,” “Future Me Hates Me,” “Expert In A Dying Field.”
Lead vocalist, songwriter, rhythm guitarist Liz Stokes hesitantly shouted “O-H!,” and to her joy, the crowd expectedly responded: “I-O!” “I’m glad that worked out,” she said with a smile, later joking they would take it to their homeland of Auckland and try it.
On stage, which was lit with lampshades that changed colors and occasionally flashed, the friendly band had fun introducing each other and performing a solid collective variety of light-hearted indie rock with occasional doses of heaviness.
Solo Chicago artist Squirrel Flower kicked the night off with a laid back plugged in guitar and soothing pitch perfect vocals, sometimes with the likes of quiet Courtney Love ballads.
She was joined by special guest Jonathan Pearce of The Beths to perform “Reelin’,” a new song that will be on her fourth record, releasing Aug. 21: Say A Prayer To The Gods Of Getting Going.
Overall, solid sets by all three artists who had album-matching live vocals and music, performed in front of a relaxed full crowd—a show that fittingly seemed somewhat like an After Party to close ComFest weekend.
