Interview: Stitched Up Heart Frontwoman Mixi

By Neil Shumate, OOTB Publications

Alternative metal hard rockers Stitched Up Heart recently released a new album titled Medusa (Judge & Jury Records)—their fourth release since forming in 2010.

Along with the album, a music video for the Los Angeles’ based band’s album title song “Medusa” was released; filmed as a retelling of the Greek myth between Medusa and Perseus.

The video and song—which features vocalist Lyric Noel—was filmed in Dallas, Texas, had a live snake on set—the video release follows the music video for “Cannibal,” which features Heidi Shepherd (Butcher Babies).

The new album—produced by Cameron Mizell (Machine Gun Kelly, Sleeping with Sirens) and Evan McKeever (Starset, Miranda Lambert)—was written from a live show perspective and focuses on topics including empowerment, resilience, healing and transformation.

Just after finishing extensive tours with Sebastian Bach and Infected Rain, lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist Alecia "Mixi" Demner took time out for this OOTB Interview to discuss the concept of the new album, collaborations, spiritually evolving and more.

What is the main thing you hope listeners take away from Medusa, lyrically?

That it’s okay to stop being the victim in your own story. Sometimes you have to become the “monster” to protect yourself and finally break the cycle.

What is the main thing you hope listeners take away from Medusa, musically?

That chaos and beauty can exist in the same song. The album is heavy, but it’s also danceable and energetic—it’s meant to make you feel alive.

Medusa has an incredible array of standout collabs. Why do you think is it important for you to work together with other artists in the industry?

I never wanted this album to feel like just my story. It’s bigger than me.

Bringing in other artists turned it into a collective voice of people who are done being quiet, done being hurt, and done playing small.

The features made it feel like a movement, instead of just another record.

Is there one musician or band you’d love to team up with outside of your genre that might surprise fans? If so, who and why them?

Billie Eilish would be my top pick.

We should make a metal song together with her ethereal vocals and my feminine rage!

Where do you do yourself in say, another decade?

I see myself still making music, but probably more as a vessel for bigger concepts—maybe even a full theatrical or conceptual project. I want to keep evolving and pushing what heavy music with spiritual depth can look like.

I also see myself continuing to speak openly about the spiritual experiences I’m having, even if it makes some people uncomfortable.

What are your goals and plans for the remainder of the year?

To hit the road again and keep connecting with the music on a deeper level, and continue building.

I also want to stay consistent with my own spiritual practice because that’s where everything I create comes from.

And honestly… just enjoy the ride.

We worked really hard for this

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

Make sure you grab the new album! We appreciate it and thank you for taking the time.
