Concert Review: AVTT/PTTN in Cleveland, Ohio

By Christian Cole, OOTB Publications

I’ll be the very first to admit that I’m not one to care for many musical collaborations or features; but, when Mike Patton and the Avett Brothers announced an album last year, it immediately piqued my interest.

I asked: “How? Why? What?” I had to hear it for myself. And admittedly, the AVTT/PTTN LP was surprisingly fantastic. It seamlessly blended the Avett Brothers folk simplicity with Patton’s weirdness. So, obviously, when the tour was announced, I HAD to see it unfold live and in person for myself.

This past Thursday, June 18, the tour stopped at the stunning Cleveland waterfront venue: Jacobs Pavilion.

The wife and I set ourselves in the bleachers, straight down the middle of the stage and prepared ourselves for what would end up being a beautiful evening of live music.

AVTT/PTTN tore through an incredible 26-song set, not only full of Avett Brothers’ staples and AVTT/PTTN cuts, but also tracks from Patton’s own endeavors—Mr. Bungle and Faith No More.

The band itself held up. Patton sat beautifully in the mix alongside the brothers, even taking verses on Avett classics and holding down the low end of the harmonies on countless others.

The brothers also lent their vocal prowess to Patton’s tunes, which were so uniquely stripped down from the originals that they really felt at home in the setlist.

Among the mix were covers of Doc Watson, The Commodores and others.

It really felt as if Mike Patton were the adopted brother of the Avetts, welcomed warmly not only by the band, but the entire crowd of onlookers.

The tour has just wrapped up, but it seems fairly certain that it will not be the last for this eccentric and sensible mix.

I recommend fans of Patton get out front and center and catch the next tour, and fans of the brothers just the same.
