“Cocaine And Abel” was the first song I ever heard by Amigo The Devil. I remember talking to a girl from Plenty Of Fish when I was single who recommended it after we discussed music—and, I never really stopped listening. His eclectic mix of horror, punk, and folk music really appeals to me.
Getting the chance to check out his live show—on his birthday: Friday, June 26—was a golden opportunity.
Skully’s in Columbus, Ohio is a little smaller than I expected; it was a packed house, shoulder to shoulder all the way to the back.
The sound was great, the crowd was into it and the atmosphere was electric.
Amigo The Devil started the show with “Stray Dog,” then rolled right into some banter before “Murder At The Bingo Hall.” The crowd came alive during this one, singing along and participating with great energy.
It was about this time that some jackass came up beside me and started talking loudly to his girlfriend about a trip he was taking, and all the trouble he was having getting his plane ticket.
He was loud and obnoxious, practically shouting to be heard, and was promptly scolded by a couple in front of him. I thought for a second I might get to see someone throw hands, but sadly he was shamed enough to head out, and the show continued.
“Hangover In Jonestown,” “Cocaine And Abel,” and “Once Upon A Time At Texaco Pt. 1” followed before a birthday cake came out, and the crowd sang “Happy Birthday.” He then began closing the show with a great run of songs.
“Hell And You,” “Perfect Wife,” and “Dahmer Goes Hollywood” closed the night.
As we maneuvered through the crowd, I was glad I went. I only wish I had gotten there earlier—this was a show that deserved a spot at the barricade, enjoyed packed asshole to elbow with other concertgoers, where the tightly packed bodies oozed heat and energy. Maybe next time?
This was a punk rock show through and through. I loved it and had a blast.
Until next time.
