Interview: Kottonmouth Kings' D-Loc and Judge D

By Neil Shumate, OOTB Publications

Since 1996 suburban Cali’s Kottonmouth Kings have been spittin’ original verses, raps and rhymes over authentic bumpin’ beats, tracks and music, and, they’re still at it—remaining steadfast stalwarts in the hip-hop rap industry with their signature “RipHop” sound.

With the group’s highly anticipated upcoming 20th+ release, California Burning—a new 5-song EP due out May 22–they recently dropped reggae leaning single “Red Eye Flight,” accompanied by a lyric video.

The EP will be the first music released under the four-member group’s brand new record label imprint Kottonmouth ReKords, distributed through Virgin Music Group, TLG.

While on the road touring with A Killer’s Confession throughout May, Kottonmouth Kings’ founder Dustin “D-Loc” Miller and longtime rap collaborator member Daniel “Judge D” Rogers (Daniel Keith Music) took time out of their schedule for this OOTB Interview to break down the new EP, reflect on their three-decade legacy, collab goals, next moves and much more.

Your new song “Red Eye Flight” is so solid, I love how the chorus grooves. When the whole EP California Burning is released May 22, what would you say are both some differences and similarities—both lyrically and musically—that listeners will notice?

I think this EP is a good eclectic mix of some of the styles that we like to present in our music. “Red Eye Flight” is the fun hip-hop side while “California Burning,” the song, is touching on our reggae style roots.

“Break The Chains” gives listeners our signature RipHop sound, while “Move Along” offers fans a deeper look into the band, through story-told life experiences.

I think listeners will definitely notice the EP’s authenticity.

After being in music for three decades now, thinking back, what’s been your biggest obstacle as a group and how did you pull through and when was that?

We have definitely been through a lot the last 30 years and it’s no secret.

Looking back, I think the biggest obstacle we faced was ourselves.

I think that the guys you see here today have dealt with their obstacles correctly and stepped up. Being healthy, mind, body, and spirit was an important factor in us doing so.

On the flip side, what’s been your biggest achievements or highlights through your music career?

There’s been so many amazing highlights, from the cover of High Times Magazine to sharing stages with some of the biggest musical names of all time( we are very thankful for all of them.

A big highlight for us right now is just being able to make the music we want to make with the people we wanna make it with.

That, plus, having a beautiful family I think will always be a highlight for us.

What’s one person or group outside of your genre that you’d like to collaborate with and why them?

Well, I think everybody’s waiting to hear Kottonmouth Kings and Snoop Dogg track. [laughs]

I think our genre is pretty wide though, so it’s a little difficult to say, but I think Kottonmouth Kings and Jelly Roll or Falling I  Reverse would both make very cool tracks in their own ways.

What’s next for you all with the launch of Kottonmouth ReKords, any plans or other artists being considered for the sublabel?

First is getting the music that we do still own re-uploaded and distributed correctly.

After that, we’re going to offer creative deals to artists for distribution and marketing.

On the tour with A Killers Confession, what can fans expect to hear?

We try to give the people the full Kottonmouth experience in whatever time we have for that show.

Playing a song or two from each era, covering the classics, and hitting hard with the new music.

You can definitely expect high energy and a great family vibe.

In say, another decade, where do you see yourself—both personally in life and as Kottonmouth Kings?

Enjoying time with family and friends, making some cool music, and having no regrets. Also, possibly having a few Kottonmouth Kings’ Museum/Airbnbs.

Is there anything you’d like to add?

We really want to thank everyone for supporting our past and continuing to support us for the future.

We are really excited to release all our new music and show the world our growth.

The current members are seasoned for success and ready for what comes next.

We look forward to seeing you at the show soon!
